What's Your Skin Type? Saint Jane Solutions for Every Complexion

What's Your Skin Type? Skincare Solutions for Every Complexion

At SAINT JANE, when our teams go to work on developing a new skincare product, your complexions and the individual nuances of your skin are at the forefront of our minds. How we can craft formulas that benefit a myriad of skin concerns, products that multi-task and bring balance, and most importantly beautifully support the multitude of skin types of our clients.

Our skin types are as different as our personalities, and knowing your skin type is crucial in finding the right rituals to support your skin. While skin types can be complex, your skin will likely fall into one or more of these categories: Dry, Oily, Combination, Normal or Sensitive.

No matter your skin type, there are SAINT JANE powerhouse products that beautifully and efficaciously address skin concerns. Here are our recommendations according to your skin type:

DRY SKIN

Having dry skin can be both uncomfortable and frustrating, as hydration plays such a key role in the overall function of our skin on the surface and the cellular level. Hydrating ingredients are always present in our formulas because they are a consistent need across every skin type, but especially for dry skin. If your skin is in desperate need of moisture and hydration, you need:

  • HYDRATING PETAL CREAM, our light-weight but deeply hydrating daily moisturizer. This petal packed cream can be applied both morning and night after cleansing. We infuse this daily hydrator with powerful luxury active florals like Hibiscus, Pink Lotus and Honeysuckle for petal soft skin and potent hydrating benefits.
  • LUXURY BEAUTY SERUM, our best-selling powerhouse serum with ultra hydrating and nourishing ingredients like Omega-3 fatty acids, Sunflower, Rosehip and Sea Buckthorn. This beautiful blend of luxury active florals, not only calm, nourish and hydrate the skin, but also locks in moisture. The ideal final step in your dry skin routine.

OILY SKIN

The biggest myth of having oily skin is that you have to deprive your skin of moisturizing products. Oily skin is caused by the overproduction of sebum, and is off-balance. The solution is to work towards balancing your skin and incorporating ingredient-driven products into your routine. Two of the best balancing ingredients for oily skin types are Hyaluronic Acid and Retinol. We have two beautiful products that happen to have these balancing ingredients:

  • HYDRATING PETAL CREAM boasts Hyaluronic Acid as a hero ingredient in the formula, and because this daily cream is so light-weight and absorbs quickly, it's the perfect hydrator for oily skin as well.
  • SACRED SLEEP OVERNIGHT REPAIR is our 0.5% Retinol solution formulated as an overnight treatment. Retinol is a powerful ingredient as it can aid in building up collagen and firming the skin. As a result, you can experience tighter pores that emit less oil for a more balanced complexion.

SENSITIVE SKIN

We have a special place in our hearts for those with sensitive skin. So much so, that every formula we create is infused with calming ingredients that soothe the skin and counteract any active ingredients traditionally known to irritate sensitivities. If you have sensitive skin, then you know it can be difficult to find products that are gentle enough to be effective, but also that don’t cause flare ups, redness or inflammation. We especially love recommending these products to our clients with sensitive skin:

  • THE C-DROPS, our gentle yet effective 10% Vitamin C serum, is the perfect solution for those with sensitive skin. Vitamin C is a highly active ingredient, and traditionally can be problematic for sensitive skin types. When we formulated The C-Drops, we included powerfully calming ingredients to counteract any harshness that Vitamin C delivers. These Vitamin C brightening drops are gentle but still very effective.
  • LUXURY BEAUTY SERUM has been a cult-favorite among our sensitive skin clients. This golden elixir is centered around visibly calming and soothing the skin from concerns like redness, irritation and inflammation. Among the many ingredients in the efficacious blend are Sunflower, Helichrysum and Marula that are naturally calming for the skin.

COMBINATION SKIN

This skin type can be tricky, as your skin can experience many concerns at once. Dry and oily areas in the same complexion need balance. Incorporating products that hydrate dry areas and exfoliate/resurface oily areas are important in your routine. Combination skin will greatly benefit from the same products recommended for both DRY and OILY skin types:

NORMAL

If your skin falls in the “normal” category, then lucky you! Your skin is balanced and can handle both hydrators and active treatments (all of the above!).

ICONIC INGREDIENT: RETINOL

Have you heard the news? We’ve added Retinol, a powerhouse skincare ingredient by anyone’s standards, to our impressive ingredient list with the launch of Sacred Sleep Overnight Repair. This renewing treatment of Luxury Active Florals and powerful Retinol restores while you dream. Before you click *add to cart*, learn more about our innovative new formula and how it can transform your skin!

What is Retinol?

There are few skincare ingredients more renowned than Retinol, but do we actually know what it is and what it does for our skin? Retinol is a powerful antioxidant and a derivative of Vitamin A. When applied topically, it converts to retinoic acid and has the ability to penetrate deeply into skin.

Retinol has become a coveted skincare ingredient partially due to its anti-aging ability. At once this hardworking ingredients can increase cell turnover, reduce evidence of sun damage, improve texture, minimize fine lines and pores…the list goes on. See some of the many benefits of Retinol below:

  • Reduces visible signs of aging by increasing cell turnover and diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Boosts collagen production and inhibits the enzyme that breaks down collagen and elastin
  • Evens skin tone and reverses sun damage by fading hyperpigmentation
  • Improves skin's texture by resurfacing to reveal a smoother complexion
  • Helps prevent breakouts by detoxifying pores and controlling overactive oil glands

While Retinol sounds like a no-brainer to add to your skincare regime like, yesterday, it’s important to understand the potential for adverse side effects. Many people suffer from irritation and retinol sensitivity while acclimating to using a retinol-based product. There are many ways to reduce Retinol sensitivity, such as using the product less frequently and being mindful of what other ingredients you combine it with.

How Is Sacred Sleep Different From Other Retinol Products?

When formulating Sacred Sleep Overnight Repair we wanted to ensure we delivered all the benefits of retinol while minimizing or eliminating its less desirable side effects. We paired .5% retinol with a host of inflammation and irritation fighting ingredients powered by our signature luxury active florals. Here are a few of the soothing florals found in Sacred Sleep:

  • Violet Flower: This soothing flower soothes dry, chafed skin and alleviates irritation
  • Elderberry Flower: Rich in antioxidants, elderberry rejuvenates skin and promotes healing
  • Lavender: This healing herb reduces inflammation and redness

    LUXURY ACTIVE FLORALS: PINK LOTUS

If you’ve tried our award-winning Hydrating Petal Cream, you know that we formulated this featherweight cream with 10 floral essences, each with their own specific benefits for skin. One of the most historically symbolic of these Luxury Active Florals is the Pink Lotus flower.

Of all the florals in our meticulously-clean formulas, the Lotus has perhaps one of the richest histories. It was revered as a symbol of purity and tranquility in several cultures. To the ancient Egyptians, it was a symbol of rebirth due to the way the flower recedes into the water at night and re-blooms fresh every morning. In Hinduism and Buddhism, the Lotus is a symbol of purity, renewal, and enlightenment. The color of the flower is also significant in Buddhist teachings, with pink being considered the ‘true lotus’ of Buddha.

The benefits of Pink Lotus in skincare are not dissimilar to the reasons it was beloved by ancient civilizations. A powerful antioxidant with anti-aging capabilities, the sacred flower is a natural fit in Hydrating Petal CreamThe lotus contains a potent amount of polyphenols and flavonoids, including Kaempferol, which is known to have the highest antioxidant level amongst 35 types of flavonoids. These help protect against free radical damage, which is a leading cause of visible premature aging. An additional benefit to preventing damage from environmental factors is that in doing so collagen and elastin production are protected, which enables the skin to remain youthful for longer.

Lotus is also a rich natural source of Alpha-Hydroxy-Acids, which gently resurface skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. By removing dead surface cells, newer, brighter skin is allowed to shine through. While the AHA content may sound unappealing to those with sensitive skin, the flower also contains many soothing properties to counteract any irritation caused by the AHAs. Lotus is a natural anti-inflammatory, which soothes redness and stressed skin. It also replenishes moisture and is naturally healing, it is even frequently used in natural medicine for wound healing.

Finally, Lotus is oil-balancing and purifying due to its ability to absorb toxins from skin and clear the complexion. It helps control sebum production without stripping skin of its natural moisture, meaning its safe to use for those with oily or acne-prone skin.

FROM PETAL TO SHELF - OUR COMMITMENT TO CLEAN AND SUSTAINABLE INGREDIENTS

The term “clean beauty” gets thrown around a lot in our industry, but what does it actually mean? Clean beauty products are supposed to be made without ingredients shown or suspected to harm human health or the environment. The truth is, however, that government regulations in the United States regarding clean products have not caught up with those in Europe and other parts of the world. Companies are relatively free to define their own version of “clean”, which makes it all the more important that you do your own research about which products you’re bringing into your home and using on your skin.

At SAINT JANE, we have always been committed to formulating our products with clean, sacred botanicals that empower your skin. We embrace ancient ingredients and the benefits they hold, while understanding that we have a responsibility to do so sustainably. We acknowledge the ancient practices and cultures that have been using our ingredients for centuries, while taking the opportunity to modernize them in a responsible way. SAINT JANE’s formulas embody this unique collaboration between time-honored practices and traditions and modern green technology. The result is sustainably cultivated and performance-driven skincare products that nourish the skin and the soul.

When sourcing our ingredients, we employ a “glocal” approach. We partner with companies and farmers around the world to support their diverse cultures and empower their rich traditions in a modern and sustainable way with environmentally sound practices. Below are just few examples of how we source our ingredients:

    • Hibiscus: We work with a family owned and operated Hibiscus farm in Hawaii. These beautiful flowers are antioxidant rich thanks to the volcanic rich soil indigenous to the Islands. The Hibiscus are cultivated by hand to ensure efficacy.

    • Prickly Pear Oil: Native to Morocco, Prickly Pear has been revered by locals for centuries. Our oil is produced by a local company that has been in business for generations. Our partnership with this small, family operated company supports and sustains the community at large by providing jobs to thousands of people and helping to protect the land from industrial farming.

    • Yeast Extract: We chose to formulate our award-winning Hydrating Petal Cream with Yeast Extract as a sustainable way of eliminating animal collagen as an ingredient while still reaping the benefits of collagen for skin.

    • Fermented Algae: We’ve collaborated with an innovative French company which has discovered multiple ways of growing and harvesting sea algae in the open sea inside a private and protected sea farm where they cultivate algae - the flowers of the sea" on submerged systems to guarantee the perpetuation of the species.

In addition to thoughtfully curating our sourcing partners, we are also committed to transparency. We provide a detailed list of all ingredients used in each of our products on our website, as well as 3rd party lab testing results so you can be sure of the safety and efficacy of our products when choosing to incorporate them into your skincare routine.

    BLOOM AND BRIGHTEN

Luxury Active Florals are at the heart of every SAINT JANE formula. We use dozens of different flowers and botanicals across all our products, each with their own unique benefits for skin.

With the launch of our new Resurfacers bundle, which features our award-winning Luxury Body Serum and The C-Drops bundled together for the first time with exclusive savings, we wanted to highlight a few of our favorite renewing flowers in those formulas.

Among the 28 omega-rich botanicals and exfoliating fruit acids in Luxury Body Serum is Damascus Rose flower oil. Known also as the Damask Rose and the Rose of Castile, the Damascus Rose is beloved for its heavenly scent. Its benefits are not just superficial, however, the oil is a coveted skincare ingredient because of its ability to renew and purify skin. A natural astringent and anti-microbial, Damascus Rose oil not only helps treat but also prevent breakouts. It also has the ability to speed wound healing, decrease hyperpigmentation, and promote a more even skin tone.

Jasmine flower oil is another floral most-famous for its scent. However, like the Damascus Rose, Jasmine contains many hidden benefits for skin. We included Jasmine in Luxury Body Serum because of its ultra-hydrating properties. It has the ability to soothe and heal dry, irritated skin in even the harshest conditions. It has even been known to aid those suffering from skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. As an added bonus, it helps promote collagen production for plump, hydrated skin!

You already know our cult-favorite The C-Drops contains a 20% Vitamin C blend, but did you know it contains 5 different types of exfoliating citrus fruit oils to help you achieve our signature glow? Orange Peel Oil is known for its ability to improve skin’s overall texture by promoting clarity and smoothness. It gently resurfaces to buff away dull, dead skin cells and reveal radiant skin. As an added bonus, it also helps promote good circulation and blood flow.

One of the reasons we are able to pack such a potent Vitamin C blend into The C-Drops is our inclusion of 500mg of full flower hemp extract.  Full flower hemp extract is famous for its anti-inflammatory capabilities. Its ability to calm breakouts, soothe irritation, and reduce redness have made it one of the most talked about skincare ingredients in recent years. We love it because it allows us to pack so many clean actives into our products that work to renew your skin without irritation and other side effects!

    SACRED BOTANICALS: FRANKINCENSE

You’ve most likely heard of Frankincense because it is said to be one of the three gifts presented at the birth of Jesus, but what exactly is Frankincense? A staple in Ayurveda and Ancient Chinese Medicine, Frankincense is an aromatic resin obtained from the trunks of the Boswellia tree. The aromatic sap was traditionally burned as incense and was said to ward off evil spirits and serpents. Native to what is now modern-day Oman, Frankincense became the most lucrative trade in the world until A.D. 400 and made southern Arabia the richest region of the world at the time.

The ancient Egyptians were among the largest consumers of Frankincense, with Queen Hatshepsut organizing the largest trading expedition in the country’s history at the time to open more trade routes and provide better access to the sacred resin. The Egyptians used Frankincense for everything from wound treatments to eyeliner, and unsurprisingly Cleopatra was one of the first to use it as a skin treatment.

The wound healing properties of Frankincense translate well into skincare. It’s a natural astringent that is renowned for its ability to balance both oily and dry skin. Not only does it help fight and prevent breakouts, but its ability also to promote natural cell regeneration enables it to reduce dark spots, scarring, and other forms of hyperpigmentation. By increasing cell turnover, skin’s radiance is also improved due to old cells being gently exfoliated away and newer, healthier cells shining through.

Frankincense is also a powerful skin protectant known to strengthen skin’s natural barrier and provide a tightening effect. This ability to improve skin’s elasticity makes it a coveted ingredient among those looking for natural anti-aging ingredients.

Finally, its potent anti-inflammatory properties make Frankincense a particularly desirable skincare ingredient this time of year when dry, irritated skin is common. Its calming abilities help improve the overall appearance of skin by reducing redness and other visible signs of distress.

It’s no wonder we included Frankincense among the 20+ luxury active florals in our cult-favorite Luxury Beauty Serum.

    YOU ASKED. WE ANSWER.

You’ve got questions, and we’ve got answers! We recently asked our customers to share their most burning questions about any of our products. They did not disappoint! At SAINT JANE, we strive to provide as much information and transparency around our award-winning products as possible. We feel that you have a right to know what’s in the products you put on your skin, and the benefits our meticulously clean ingredients can provide. That way, you can make an informed decision on which products earn their spot in your daily skincare routine. We’re answering five of our most-asked questions below!

Q: “I have normal to oily skin, will Luxury Beauty Serum make me break out?”

A: Dubbed “the face oil to end all face oils” by Stylecaster, Luxury Beauty Serum is a powerful treatment designed to address numerous skin concerns. Not only will it not clog pores, but it also works to detoxify them thanks to ingredients such as Calendula. Super ingredient Sea Buckthorn also helps balance excess oil production while 500mg of Full Flower Hemp Extract calms inflammation and irritation from current breakouts. In short, Luxury Beauty Serum is safe to use for all skin types.

    Q: “What does glycerin-encapsulated Vitamin C mean?”

A: A good Vitamin C serum is a staple in any skincare routine, but these powerful serums can irritate sensitive skin. Our unique formula for The C-Drops contains a potent 20% Vitamin C blend, which we encapsulated in glycerin to ensure the serum penetrates the skin’s deepest layers for maximum results while minimizing irritation and redness.

Q: “Can The C-Drops be layered with your other products, or do they have to be used on their own?”

A: All of our products are designed to complement one another and enhance each other’s effects. We suggest using The C-Drops as the first step in your routine, followed by Luxury Beauty Serum and Hydrating Petal Cream for maximum hydration and radiance.

Q: “Which of your products are okay to use under makeup?”

A: Hydrating Petal Cream is not only a deeply hydrating moisturizer, but it also works beautifully under makeup for petal-soft skin that lasts all day. Bright Repair Eye Cream's silky formula absorbs effortlessly and is perfect under concealer and foundation. Our no-pill formulas enables makeup to glide on seamlessly for a naturally glowing complexion.

Q: “Is Hydrating Petal Cream only a summer moisturizer?”

A: Definitely not! Don’t let Hydrating Petal Cream’s featherweight texture fool you. The formula boasts 1% pure Hyaluronic Acid for deep hydration capable of standing up to winter conditions.

    SACRED BOTANICALS: HIBISCUS

We don’t use the term “hero ingredient” often or lightly, but Hibiscus is justifiably a hero ingredient. As a natural source of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) and anti-aging antioxidants, Hibiscus has more than earned its “Nature’s Botox” moniker. It’s no wonder we blended potent Hibiscus Seed peptides into our new Hydrating Petal Cream.

You might be wondering what makes Hibiscus any different than other skincare ingredients that claim a myriad of benefits for your face. There are so many ingredients out there that claim to do this or fix that, it can be overwhelming trying to work them all into your routine. One of the things we love most about Hibiscus is that its potent peptides pack multiple benefits into this one ingredient.

Hibiscus is not only rich in antioxidant Vitamin C, a powerhouse skincare ingredient by anyone’s standards, it also contains anthocyanosides. Anthocyanosides neutralize free radicals, a major source of skin aging, and act as an anti-inflammatory to visibly calm stressed skin. Those with sensitive skin know how hard it can be to find a powerful skincare product that doesn’t cause irritation as an unfortunate side effect. Due to its inflammation-fighting capabilities, Hibiscus is one of the rare ingredients that can do both. In case those benefits weren’t enough, anthocyanosides also act as an astringent and minimize the appearance of pores.

Fighting signs of aging isn’t the only superpower in Hibiscus’s arsenal. It’s also a rich source of AHAs. These gentle exfoliators increase cell turnover, reduce breakouts, and brighten the complexion without stripping the skin of its natural oils. They also improve skin’s texture and reduce the appearance of age spots and hyperpigmentation over time.

Finally, Hibiscus has a high mucilage content. Mucilage is a substance created by plants to help them retain water and nutrients. It works as an intense hydrator for skin and improves skin’s ability to retain moisture, resulting in a supple, youthful complexion.

Hibiscus is just one of many hardworking botanicals we use in our products. Clean, potent ingredients are the focus of our formulations, and the results speak for themselves. Incorporate our new Hydrating Petal Cream into your skincare routine and experience the power of Hibiscus for yourself.

A Candid Interview With Our Founder, Casey Georgeson and re•spin, An Online Wellness Community

THE WAY THIS “CLEAN” BEAUTY BRAND IS PUTTING WOMEN’S HEALING AND EMPOWERMENT FIRST
    By: Jessica Ourisman

“What’s in a name?” Shakespeare once wrote. In the case of the indie beauty brand, Saint Jane, there is actually great depth and significance in their name. It references a historical figure and saint, Jane De Chantal, a French baroness who dedicated her life to healing and uplifting vulnerable women outcast by society in the 1500s. This healing legacy alludes to the root of the founder’s mission and ethos, whose philosophy aims to heal sensitive skin and to empower women — giving back to non-profits that empower girls and women.

But as the mother of three young daughters, CEO and founder Casey Georgeson’s business decisions to prioritize women’s health are deeply personal. As you’ll learn, she aims to support women’s health, healing, and wellness through critical moments of pause and self-care set aside to nourish and rē-connect the mind, body, skin, and spirit. Georgeson’s story also provides insight into the growing “clean” beauty niche, which is slowly but surely transforming the billion-dollar industry, rē-spinning the way consumers think about beauty and personal care products.

    The Founder’s Journey to “Clean”

    The Controversy Over “Clean”

Many deride the clean beauty industry, in part due to the fact that the term is still legally unregulated and thus can be used as a marketing ploy. Although a growing body of research exists, experts often disagree when it comes to what constitutes “safe” (with a major debate brewing over sunscreen), fueling discourse and continued research — but also divisive rhetoric among impassioned beauty consumers and commentators. If you’re one of the skeptics, simply try thinking of the push for “non-toxic” beauty in terms of consumer preference; just as some of us prefer organic, farm-to-table cuisine, opt to be vegetarians or flexitarians, or to practice yoga as opposed to pilates, it comes down to personal choice and sovereignty over one’s body — something that each of us is entitled to. After all, what makes a person feel safe is a highly personal decision. Even without industry regulations in place, you can trust that the products you purchase from Saint Jane adhere to Georgeson’s notion of “clean”; namely, “ingredients that are globally recognized to be less toxic.”

“For too many years, women didn’t know ingredients in their beauty products were toxic or dangerous, like Formaldehyde, which we now know is a carcinogen.” Talc is another common (and legal) ingredient that has been found to occasionally be contaminated with the carcinogen asbestos, and Johnson & Johnson has actually been ordered to pay billions of dollars in damages to cancer patients and their families due to suspected links between their talcum powder — yes, the same baby powder made for use on our babies — and the disease. (As recently as June 2021, J&J lost a Supreme Court appeal to overturn a $2 billion settlement awarded by a jury, after already having been ordered to pay $4.9 billion in damages for talc’s link to ovarian cancer back in 2018.)

Debates aside, growing consumer interest in personal care, fragrance, skincare, and cosmetic products that make their ethics part of their business models — from sustainability, to ingredient selection, to supply chain transparency — is apparent. “Brands are absolutely taking notice [of this growing consumer trend and] represents a significant shift that I believe will ultimately make the beauty industry safer and more regulated,” Georgeson says. She is not alone in her belief that beauty’s best practices should be aligned with wellness of the self, with that of the planet, animals, and the communities of people involved.

rē-Thinking Beauty and Wellness as One

“The wellness of our planet is integral to the brand,” Georgeson says. “We partner with companies and farmers around the world to support their diverse cultures and empower their rich traditions in a modern and sustainable way with environmentally sound practices.” Whether it occurs tomorrow or in the next 20 years, the industry is undergoing a shift that is being led by health-conscious entrepreneurs and brands like Saint Jane.
