I’ve always had a deep love for florals. The way they can brighten your mood, lift your spirit, and the way they can recollect memories of people you’ve known and places you’ve been. It wasn’t until I started building SAINT JANE, and diving into clean ingredient research that I discovered just how powerful florals were for transforming the skin. Using florals to nurture, heal and pamper the skin dates back centuries and these powerful petals have been revered across the globe in so many different cultures.

For example, Cleopatra the Egyptian beauty, was said to have rose water baths regularly and cleansed her skin and body with its powerful elixir. Shakespeare has written about the queen’s beauty ritual in ‘Antony and Cleopatra’ and he even mentioned how  Cleopatra’s cedar-wood ships bore the scent of rose water. 

Helichrysum or “Immortelle” has been used since the civilization of Ancient Greece, where it was commonly used after battles to heal wounds and care for the skin. Helichrysum essential oil was mixed with honey or olive oil and applied topically to treat skin conditions like burns and scars and even respiratory and digestive issues due to its revered anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

When it comes to skin care, sun protection is of the utmost importance and should be a non-negotiable part of your daily ritual. Protecting your skin from harmful UVA/UVB radiation is crucial for both anti-aging and skin cancer prevention. When choosing and applying sunscreen, there are many factors. How much should you apply? How often should you reapply? Which sunscreen is right for you? What is a mineral sunscreen? Luckily, we asked a Board-Certified Dermatologist, Dr. Nina Desai, to give us the full SPF 101 with Luxury Sun Ritual SPF 30. Dermatologists know best!

Q: What is a mineral sunscreen?

Dr. Desai: A mineral sunscreen, or a physical sunscreen, is made of either Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. These products sit on the top layer of the skin and reflect harmful UV rays, acting as a barrier between your delicate skin and the damaging effects of the sun. Mineral sunscreens are safe for everyone, even children!

Q: How much sunscreen should you apply?

Dr. Desai: “I like to recommend the “3 Finger Method” when applying sunscreen. This means you disperse enough sunscreen to cover 3 fingers. Then you apply that amount to your face and your neck. Be sure to blend thoroughly. I love Luxury Sun Ritual because it doesn’t leave a white-cast like a lot of mineral sunscreens. The unique formula blend has a slight tint, which leaves an invisible, pore-smoothing finish while also keeping the skin hydrated.”

Q: How often should you reapply sunscreen?

Dr. Desai: Regardless of if you are wearing a mineral or a chemical sunscreen, you need to reapply your sunscreen every 2-3 hours if you are out in the sun, right after swimming and if you are exercising and sweating, especially.

Q: Is Luxury Sun Ritual a Tinted Foundation?

Dr. Desai: Luxury Sun Ritual’s unique formula combines 10% Zinc Oxide with a hint of color. It’s important to know that this product is not a foundation or a color product. This is a sunscreen and the hint of color balances out the white cast often left by Zinc Oxide, without sacrificing any of the powerful sun protection benefits.
