SACRED BOTANICALS: POMEGRANATE
Our award-winning Luxury Beauty Serum contains over 20 clean, hardworking botanicals. Each of them brings their own list of benefits to the table, and Pomegranate is no exception. In fact, the list of potential benefits that pomegranate holds for skin is so long, it definitely earns its super-ingredient title.
As one of the world’s most ancient fruits, pomegranates have a rich history across many ancient civilizations. In early Jewish culture, the fruit was considered a symbol of sanctity and abundance. In China, it was a symbol of fertility, with Buddha often depicted holding a pomegranate to represent an abundance of sons. In ancient Greek culture, it became a symbol of rejuvenation and eternal life due to its association with Persephone, the goddess of spring. Given what we know now about the detoxifying and anti-aging properties of pomegranates, it is not surprising that the fruit was revered by so many ancient peoples.
Pomegranate is often lauded for its antioxidant properties, and for good reason. It contains approximately 48% of the daily recommended dose of Vitamin C, a skincare hero-ingredient by any standards, as well as other antioxidants such as anthocyanins, ellagic acid, and tannins. The high dose of antioxidants helps fight free radical damage and even protect against future damage. It also empowers cell regeneration and healing, which makes it an effective treatment for sunspots and hyperpigmentation.
If you’re like us, anti-aging benefits are one of the first properties we look for in our skincare ingredients. Pomegranate does not disappoint in this area. Studies have shown that pomegranate seed oil may help improve cell turnover and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is also known to promote smooth, firm skin by empowering collagen and elastin production – two key ingredients for a more youthful complexion. It also not only stimulates new collagen production, but helps protect the collagen you already have, leading to even more anti-aging power.
Finally, pomegranate is rich in fatty acids and deeply hydrating due to its ability to penetrate to the deepest layers of skin. It is particularly effective in the winter months, as it helps prevent moisture loss to fight dry, irritated skin. However, those who suffer from acne-prone skin need not worry, pomegranate will not clog pores and even contains anti-microbial properties to help prevent future breakouts. It’s also an anti-inflammatory, which helps calm existing breakouts and soothes red, irritated skin. By reducing inflammation, circulation is improved which supercharges skin’s ability to heal and regenerate itself.
